It is essential to maintain the position of the teeth with a retainer once they have been straightened in order to maintain the stability of the supporting structures.
We will provide you with an orthodontic retainer after your treatment is complete so that you can maintain your new smile. It is for this reason that it is called a “retainer”: it serves to retain the movements achieved by your braces or Invisalign treatment.
There are different options of retainers available:
Retainers that are fixed are attached to the teeth on the backside (where the tongue rests) and prevent the front teeth from moving. A fixed option usually consists of a thin wire bonded to the back of the upper and/or lower teeth (depending on the specifics of each treatment).
In terms of removable retainers, Essix types are one of the most common types. Specifically designed to fit snugly over the teeth, it consists of a set of top and bottom aligners made of clear molded plastic.
As a result of their custom-fitting design, they keep the teeth in place after treatment has been completed. Essix retainers cost between $350 and $550; however, this is already included in the price of the original treatment. When properly maintained and taken care of, Essix retainers can last for many years.
The Invisalign® Vivera retainer looks similar to the Essix retainer, but as with Invisalign®, they are made of the same high-quality material. Vivera retainers are custom-made to fit snugly over both top and bottom teeth, and are made with the SmartTrack material patented by Invisalign®, which makes them last longer.
Due to the meticulous lab work involved in creating the customised retainers with patented material, Vivera retainers cost more than Essix retainers. Vivera retainers are a great investment for your smile and your health, as they are offered in 3 sets (6 retainers in total).
